I happened to spend the last days of 2009 in Vienna, the home of opera and Viennese cuisine. Wiener schnitzel, tafelspitz, Sacher cake, apple strudel, lot’s of hot chocolate, coffee and glühwein. I am glad that I never put on weight as I think I’ve had the calories intake for the rest of 2010!
Some highlights from my New Year trip in Vienna.
Wiener schnitzel at Beil Czaak (Fleischmarkt 28,1010 Wien, Austria,01 5137215). Waited for two hours as the place was packed. It was worth it though.
Wiener schnitzel at Plachutta (Wollzeile 38,1010 Wien, Austria,01 5121577). Have never seen so many waiters for one table at a casual restaurant.
Wiener schnitzel at Stuck-Heuriger ( Stuckasse 6, 1070, Wien, tel. 0676 6626939 ) The owner of the restaurant does everything- stands at the bar, cooks, speaks to his clients…
Tafelspitz at Plachutta. Viennese speciality not many foreigners know. Boiled beef is served in a clear soup, eaten with horse radish, mayonnaise, rosti and black bread. Perfect winter food.
Foie gras parfait with apple jelly and warm brioche at bio restaurant called Hollmann Salon ( im Heiligenkreuzerhof, Grashofgasse 3,A-1010 Vienna, tel. +43.1.96.11.960.43 )
