The Grand Dame of Zurich celebrates 125 years

In 2024, one of Zurich’s most majestic and luxurious hotels, the Dolder Grand is celebrating its 125th anniversary, marking a milestone in its storied history as a premier destination for luxury, art, and culinary excellence. Perched atop the central wooded mountain, Adlisberg hill. This palatial hotel, goes beyond traditional expectations and aims to be a city resort combining historical charm, modern sophistication and an art-centred experiential twist. An objective they have achieved seamlessly, while not far from the centre of Zurich, one feels completely removed and at peace, while strangely, simultaneously part of the city.  On a personal note, this hotel is a longtime my favourite, a place I’ve been coming back to for years.

Traditional Luxury

With 175 luxurious rooms and suites, the Dolder Grand offers breathtaking views of Zurich, Lake Zurich, and the Swiss Alps. The recently added “Spa Wing” has been designed by famous British modernist architect Lord Norman Foster, the majestic presence is enhanced by the opulent interiors and exteriors adorned with an array of artworks, which add fascinating and stimulating levels of intrigue to any stay, through the thought provoking and humouristic choice of pieces. Since its opening in 1899, the hotel provides an unrivalled setting for discerning travellers, hosting illustrious guests and significant events.

Monumental Feasting

Celebrated for its exceptional dining experiences, the Dolder is home to several establishments. “The Restaurant,” under the longtime culinary direction of Chef Heiko Nieder, who is in my humble opinion one of the most underrated chefs in the world, while the restaurant holds two Michelin stars, a third would do him justice. Innovative gourmet cuisine, chef Nieder’s genius lies in his ability to transform even the most simple vegetable into next-level culinary experience. His focus on freshness and innovation is evident in dishes like Breton lobster with strawberries, beetroot, tarragon, and mustard, and eggplant with garden herbs, pickled mushrooms and miso.

This fresh focus is underlined by his newest project, the chef’s garden, which may be one of the best currently in Europe, blossoming with herbs, vegetables and flowers centred around a Keith Haring statue. The garden is situated on one side on the edge of the forest and the train station, and, on the other next to the Blooms, a seasonal restaurant that delights with vegan and vegetarian dishes in a serene outdoor setting. The Saltz restaurant, designed by artist Rolf Sachs, celebrates local flavours with a stylish and relaxed ambiance. Mikuriya, an intimate Japanese restaurant, provides an exclusive dining experience with Japanese specialties.

Spa and Wellness

The Dolder Grand Spa spans 4,000 square metres and is a haven of relaxation and rejuvenation. Awarded for its unique programs and treatments, the spa features a large swimming pool, Japanese-inspired sunaburo, kotatsu foot bath, aroma pool, steam pot, cold-water basin, samarium and steam bath, and cool off in the snow paradise with separate areas for both men and women. The spa’s architecture, also designed by Lord Norman Foster with input from American spa expert Sylvia Sepielli, combines dynamic lines and carefully selected materials to create an inspirational environment that appeals to all senses.

The Aqua Zone houses a large swimming pool lined in black granite, with an entire wall of glass that provides a stunning view of the natural surroundings. Additional spaces for relaxation include a meditation walk with its fascinating mirror mosaic dome, chillout area with hanging lounger chairs, and a spa terrace with Fernando Botero’s sculpture “Woman with Fruit.”

Epicurean Festival

THE EPICURE, the Dolder Grand’s annual gourmet festival, is a highlight for culinary enthusiasts. From July 2 to 7, 2024, renowned chefs from around the globe showcased their talents. Among them were Norbert Niederkofler, a pioneer of sustainable cuisine from the Italian Alps; Jan Hartwig, whose restaurant in Munich was the latest restaurant in Germany to receive 3 Michelin stars; Vaughan Mabee, known for innovative dishes at Amisfield in Queenstown; and Javier Torres, part of the acclaimed Cocina Hermanos Torres in Barcelona. This culinary extravaganza culminated in a grand finale featuring eleven food stations, a bar, and live entertainment, making it a must-visit event for gastronomes.

Over five evenings, guests enjoyed unique multiple course dinners created by Heiko Nieder and his guest chefs. The festival’s final day showcased top chefs at live cooking stations, where guests could watch the chefs at work. The event concluded with a bar experience, a cigar lounge, and live entertainment, offering an immersive culinary journey.

Art Enrichment

The Dolder Grand boasts an extensive art collection, featuring over 100 works by world-renowned artists, from contemporary art to classic works, such as Salvador Dalí and Takashi Murakami. The family who own the establishment are passionate art collectors and each experience at the hotel from the restaurant to the spa, in which a wonderful Miró statue provides a point of focus, is enriched but the surrounding art, which  is constantly renewed, updated and curated. The integration of art within the hotel’s design highlights its commitment to cultural enrichment, providing a unique experience that goes beyond conventional luxury.

As the Dolder Grand commemorates 125 years of excellence, it continues to set the standard for luxury hospitality in Zurich, promising guests an unforgettable blend of art, culture, and gastronomy amid breathtaking surroundings.
