New Tayyabs, London

New Tayyabs

I’ve read many positive things about New Tayyabs (Zagat 28/30!!) “authentic” Pakistani in Whitechapel, where you have to “queue to get a table”, the prices are “negligible” and the food is to “die for”, simply “the best South Eastern Asian in London”.

We didn’t have to wait for a table, actually half of the restaurant was empty. 64 £ for three people for lunch is not expensive I guess, if you don’t count 50 £ for a taxi to go there and back from Central London.

But to be honest, I don’t think the food was “superb” or different from other Indian and Pakistani restaurants I’ve been. (And I’ve been to many of them as I love Indian food) Ordinary curries you can get in any decent place (I didn’t try the famous kebabs, maybe they are spectacular, I don’t know), while I have undoubtedly eaten much better naans- the naans at New Tayyabs were dry and flavourless. Salty and mango lassis were also ok, but nothing “amazing” about them.

I do think New Tayyabs is a great “deal” restaurant if you live or work in the Whitechapel area, but is definitely not worth a special trip.
